Judith Stoddart

Judith Stoddart serves as vice provost for University Arts and Collections. In this role, Dr. Stoddart is responsible for supporting those units across campus that hold significant cultural and intellectual collections that serve the research, scholarship, and outreach missions of the University, including the Beal Botanical Garden, MSU Broad Art Museum, MSU Museum, and the Wharton Center. She also serves as the coordinator for the comprehensive, campus-wide arts strategy.

Prior to her appointment in this role, Dr. Stoddart served as senior associate dean in the MSU Graduate School from 2017-2022, and interim Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School from 2015 to 2017. Dr. Stoddart has provided national leadership in graduate education, serving on the steering committee for the Big 10/ACM Mellon Undergraduate and Faculty Fellows Program for a Diverse Professoriate (2015-22) and the SERU governing advisory board (Center for Studies in Higher Education, Berkeley) (2020-23). In recognition of her work with graduate programs across MSU and with national partners on initiatives to improve doctoral student recruitment, mentoring, and career and professional development, she was awarded the Council of Graduate Schools national Associate Dean Leadership award. Dr. Stoddart is a faculty member in the Department of English, where her graduate and undergraduate teaching have been recognized by departmental and university awards. In her faculty and Graduate School roles, she developed teaching and scholarly collaborations with MSU’s museums and collections, including a year-long writers-in-residence program and symposia with the MSU Broad Art Museum and a multi-disciplinary summer residency program for doctoral students with the MSU Museum.

A National Merit Scholar and a Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Stoddart received a D.Phil. and M.Phil. in English from Oxford University and is an Honors College alum of Michigan State University
