Engaging in Civil Discourse
Sept. 16, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
Respect is a core value at MSU and includes treating people with dignity and civility, but speech that does not meet these ideals may nonetheless be protected speech under the First Amendment. It is important to remember that personal views expressed by faculty, staff and students are their own and do not represent the position of Michigan State University.
Free speech and academic freedom are essential cornerstones of learning. Universities play an important role in convening people to raise awareness and encourage dialogue around different viewpoints and experiences, and Michigan State University is no exception.
The varied experiences of students, faculty and staff help ensure that MSU is a safe environment that welcomes independent thought and the free exchange of ideas. As members of our community weigh in on current events, we want to take a moment to share information available through the university’s website that may help answer questions around free speech and also provide links to resources.
MSU’s Freedom of Speech website includes an FAQ that answers common questions around exercising rights under the First Amendment and provides guidance for those seeking clarification around certain communications. The FAQ addresses questions such as:
• Which types of speech are not protected under the First Amendment?
• Does the First Amendment apply to speech in the workplace?
University Communications and Marketing (UCAM) provides Social Media Guidelines to help faculty and staff navigate the use of social media channels in their roles at MSU. It is important to remember that individuals who identify as faculty, staff or student employees as part of their personal social media presence, are encouraged to observe the university’s social media guidelines.
UCAM also provides an overview of and resources for addressing online attacks, if an individual experiences threats or harassment through social media and other channels.
Furthermore, should members of our campus community experience or be made aware of harassing or discriminatory communications or conduct based on a protected identity (e.g., race, gender identity, political persuasion, etc.,) or a person having difficulty participating in MSU programs or activities based on their protected identity, they should reach out to the Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance and Education (OCR).
Should you have additional questions, please contact your unit’s human resources staff or reach out to the following university units:
• MSU Human Resources via email at SolutionsCenter@hr.msu.edu or at 517-353-4434
• Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs via email at fasaffairs@msu.edu or at 517-353-5300
Michigan State University is a forum where members of our community should feel comfortable to engage in civil and respectful discourse, free from harassment and violence. Please take a moment to review the information linked in this communication and do not hesitate to reach out to campus resources for guidance and support.
Sincerely,
Laura Lee McIntyre
